Ascent Trip ReportWe were camping at Aaregg campsite on the shore of the Brienzersee. (The campsite name comes from the sound people utter when they are told the price of a pitch) True to forecast the morning dawned overcast and wet with no sign of improvement. We could either while away the day in the tent or settle for a wet day on the Brienzer Rothorn.
We left the camp site 08:45 and followed the lake side road and path to the turning to Schwanden, then roads through Schwanden to Upper Schwanden where there is a sign pointing the way to Brienzer Rothorn and parking for 4 cars. We set off up the track which ascends through forest, hard going in the warmth, humidity and rain. The path is obvious and well signed eventually emerging onto alpine meadow at 1900m and continues to the ridge by which time the rain has turned to sleet and we're no longer too hot. Path along ridge passes chair lift top station and joins wide track to the fenced summit area with seats and under 3 sided metal pyramid structure, a granite survey pillar. Surprisingly we are not alone, there are two others there, they greet us and one points into the solid greyness adding with a smile , Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau. The summit offers little other than hypothermia so we descend to the cable car station where a girl in the deserted restaurant serves us mugs of hot chocolate and tells us sternly that if we want to eat sandwiches we have to go downstairs. We relocate taking dripping sacs and waterproofs downstairs which is actually OK with tables and radiators.
Depart 14:55 taking the path crossing back and forth over the mountain railway via Planalp back to Brienz. Weather improves late in the afternoon.
