Ascent Trip Reportsummitpost lists mt. charleston via ski lee with the comment "This is not a popular route for ascending Mt. Charleston". indeed, it's not popular. of all the GPS tracks on peakbagger only Rob Woodall's goes via this route.
based on rob's track i knew that this would be steep... ugh, so steep: gaining 1400' in 0.6mi. i really don't recommend this route.
there were some cairns starting after the creek, and they differed from rob's climb. it seems someone likes this trail, and not only placed various cairns, but also trimmed various trees. i lost the cairns about half-way up, and from there i picked my way uphill toward the saddle where this approach crosses to the north loop trail. i would knock several rocks downhill accidentally, and they would fall, and fall, and fall. this pushed my comfort zone for steep travel on not entirely solid surface.
near the saddle i spotted the gully that rob had ascended, and there was a rope there tied to a tree, dangling down the gully. i didn't investigate that any further: i couldn't see any safe way to get from the saddle to the gully.
the north loop trail goes up/down a number of times before it starts its gentle ascent to the summit.
to control my descent i wore gloves, and used one pole. i frequently had to descend with my face to the mountain to get down past various slippery steep sections. a few times i had to backtrack to find my way down various rock ledges. in general i just went in the direction that i felt most comfortable, and eventually reconnected with the cairns about half way down.
in retrospect i think i would have had a better day had i just done the standard 16mi hike on the trail :)
