Ascent Trip Report

Colorado Mountain Club (CMC) trip. We carpooled to the site and I was one of the three carpoolers. I escorted Ty and Mariya. We arrived after heavy traffic on I-80 to the trailhead parking at Halfmoon Campground and left when all arrived. There was some issues with getting packs ready but we took our time and hiked in 3 miles gaining 1,300 feet to the Halfmoon Pass and then dropped 900 feet and camped at the site #1 near the East Cross Creek. The site was excellent with a cool pinnacle nearby with great views, running creek water and accommodate all 10 of us. I chose to go ultra light and slept I a bivy with new ultra light gear. I helped set up several tents and participated in much community service like hanging bear bags.

We left at 4AM and crossed the creek and summit after another 3 miles and a 3,300 foot additional gain. We clustered into three separate groups based on hiking speed or starting time. I summited with the fist group (Tom-Robin-Barbara)who I have found to be very competent backpacker/hiker/summitters. As with the LaPlata trip earlier, Robin and I displayed the worst case of summit fever in the group, and left the others when only 400 feet was left to go and topped out first. I stayed on the summit for 60 to 90 minutes awaiting all groups to summit and take photos.

In total it is about 12 miles, 5,500 feet of total gain and took a day and half.
This summit is one of the most spectacular peaks with exciting pinnacles, couloirs, and scenic approaches.
