Ascent Trip ReportMy first 14,000'er. I went straight up Bross from the Kite Lake Trailhead. This trail is steep and full of loose rock. But doable with patience. To be honest I enjoyed the difficult climb up this way. Most people take the coll between Democrat and Cameron. Which is also a steep hike but without nearly as much loose rock. I started out a 7:45am. I did all four summits only 3 counting as 14er's. Cameron is not a 14er by definition. It does not have 300' of prominence from Mt. Lincoln. In any event it was a slow trek up Bross. However, once up you have an easy summit of Lincoln and Cameron from there. The trail is wide open and easy to follow this time of year. There was a little snow here and there but nothing you had to walk through. I found a small spring on top of Cameron. Not sure others know much about it. It is just beyond the summit so a feel many walk by it not realizing it is there. Pretty neat to so see this tiny spring 14,000' up. Anyway, it was an easy walk from Bross to Lincoln and Lincoln to Cameron. From the summit of Cameron you descent about 1000' before hitting the coll to head back up Democrat. The climb up Democrat looks steep and it is. There is nothing but rock the entire climb. However, the rock is much larger and not loose like the climb up Bross. I guess this is why those attempting the 4 bagger for the day go up Democrat first. Not I. haha. A cloud was rolling in as I ascended Democrat and chased everyone off the mountain. There was not thunder or rain at this point so I kept going up. I got the the summit and the only living things up there were 2 Ravines waiting for me. A little ominous but funny. I had the summit to myself, it was great. Took some pics and headed down feeling great that I did 3 official 14,000'ers on my first attempt at one. Plus, a unofficial 14,000'er. haha. Pretty great day. I highly recommend this hike. Very cool views and the start is outside Alma, Co. Long dirt road drive up to Kite Lake is cool. I got back to my truck at 1:30 pm. Great day and so happy I bagged a 14er, x 3. |
