Ascent Trip Report

Stayed at Brewster Hut the night before. From my journal:

Didn't sleep well (too warm for quilt, groundsheet on hut mattress sticky and noisy). Went up Mt. Armstrong (many false summits annoying!) then backtracked to 1800m elevation and countoured to the pond and glacier terminal face. The contouring was tricky (a bit steep at times... and a wet rock with thin red moss extremely slippery), but the glacier was awesome, easily the best thing I've seen in New Zealand so far. Got to stand on the glacier, which was really pure ice. Maybe could have went under it at least a little, but a bit worried of big chunks falling off (like the pile of chunks I would have had to climb over). Pond area was amazing too... out of this world.
