Ascent Trip Report

Set out from base camp in afternoon to climb to High Camp by tarn at 16,500 ft. Dinner and a couple of hours of sleep, then set off in early, early morning for summit. Cold in dark, beautiful dawn. Clipped into fixed ropes on upper south east ridge along with several other climbing parties. Optimistic objective was East summit, but significant recent snowfall on upper mountain was untracked, deep and perhaps unstable. We were content with the south summit and a spectacular view in every direction, including Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, Ama Dablam and countless other giants. After an hour or so on top we rappelled down the fixed ropes then did the long descent all the way back to base camp. Great day and climb despite bad cases of the Khumbu cough.
