Ascent Trip Report

A warm-up hike for a trip to the Wallowas with friends. It was a very drizzly day and was pretty well socked in the entire trek. The trail is kind of steep at the beginning, but mainly just long compared to the elevation gain. There are a couple places with exposed rock that make for some fun class 2 or 3 scrambles right next to the trail. The sign on the PCT for the summit of Buck Peak had been taken (broken?) off, but there was still a post at the junction to the very narrow climbers' trail. A portion of the PCT used to get to the peak goes through the protected Bull Run Watershed (Where Portland gets its water) and there are stern warnings not to go off the trail in that area.
On the way back down there was a brief brake in the clouds and an astonishing view of Mt. Hood. It was so brief (10 seconds?) that it almost seemed like our imaginations.
There is a fee to park at the Lost Lake campground ($5 or $7 I think), and you can cut off about 2 miles of the RT (listed as 16mi) if you park in the southernmost lot.
