Ascent Trip ReportI was pleasantly surprised at this final peak. The approach on the loop was many false summits of fun slabs so the rock hopping and climbing was fun. The summit had a so so peak view, but coming over the top and down the backside I realized that the rhyolite experiences on Center Ridge and The Traveler had now given way to columnar basalt. The backside ledges show this material in several interesting places. Those ledges show outstanding views of the lakes below and the trail becomes quite steep coming down.
Although I agree the counter clockwise tour of the loop is the best way (saving the less steep; less talus direction for the descent - not the ascent) either direction starts with a pretty steep ascent up the ridges. I would hate to slog down the talus of Peak of the Ridges on the way down when you are tired. The North Traveler Mountain Trail is easier with much more class 1 than 2; and Center Ridge is almost all class 2 and 2+ to the top.
Total hike was around 10.7 miles and with all the additional gain and regain and false summits - ends up just under 4000 feet. They say it is 3600 to 3800 feet but the additional gain I added up along the way was consistent with GPS and fitbit readings at closer to 4000 feet of total gain from parking lot to parking lot. Even the "flat" approach hike from the parking lot to the Center Ridge trail up Peak of the Ridges, meanders up and down slopes along the lakes before you start.
