Ascent Trip ReportThis peak is actually called "Peak of the Ridges" not "Center Ridge" but I propose to rename it "Peak of Many False Summits"
My son Ben awoke at 3:45 AM to boat my eldest son and me over Moosehead Lake at 4:00AM. We (David and I) then drove all the way south to Guilford to access I-95 so we could drive up to the northern entrance to Baxter State Park. The drive was about 3.5 hours. We arrived at the Matagamon Gate around 7:20 AM and paid the out of state $15 entrance fee. Then drove to the TH parking lot at Pogy Notch. We started just before 8:00 AM.
This hike reminded me a lot of Mount Kineo and that it starts with a long flat trail approach by two lakes (similar to the carriage trail along Moosehead Lake) then suddenly it ascends ridiculously fast up the side of the ridge (like the Indian Trail) along a series of ledges overlooking the lakes below and all the while hiking on volcanic rhylolite. Like Kineo you have to climb up and over several false summits. But here the comparison changes. Kineo has 2 false summits and a total gain of around 900 feet; this climbs has countless demoralizing false summits of very interesting pinnacles and with all the regain climbs at least 2,400 feet.
The views of the top of this peak are quite nice. Coming down the other side is a nice arête reminiscent of the "Knife Edge" on Baxter Peak but not nearly as exposed or narrow. Still there is a lot of nice class 2/2+ scampering on the backside and few opportunities for class 3 as well with nice views in both directions.
