Ascent Trip ReportThis trip was a lot longer and tougher than anticipated. Gerry Roach pegs this at a 7 mile loop, so I was thinking 3 hours, maybe 4. It took almost 8. We had a pretty mixed bag of hikers - as far as ability. Nate ate Wendy's before. Sam had jeans on (he cut them off into shorts on the way up Mt. Lincoln). I was concerned that some folks might not know what they were getting into. Delia and Nate struggled early. Paul and I set the pace. Whitney wasn't too far behind us. There are a lot of trails up there and we took a wrong turn somewhere - ended up at Lake Emma, which was definitely way off course. We veered back and ended up taking on the Southeast Ridge, which involved some scrambling and loose rock, instead of approaching directly from the east, as Roach instructs. Wasn't difficult, it was just a little tricky at times and steeper than the alternative. I think we just took the wrong trail from the trailhead. Paul had to peel back and stick with Delia. I kept chugging and was on Democrat almost 30 minutes before Whitney arrived. Next person up, surprisingly, was Nate. Next I descended into the saddle and it was a tough, long climb up Cameron - but beautiful views on the ridge. Cameron is flat (most do not classify this as an independent mountain) and it was incredibly windy. It was a short hike over to Lincoln - liked this summit the best. Next was a long, but easy walk over to Bross. Coming down was a long slog. It was steep, loose, and difficult, but forgiving.
