Ascent Trip ReportCool place. Wildflowers rated a 9 out of 10, for real! 20+ varieties easy.
We drove N from Winnemucca, through Paradise. Road is easy to the saddle, an RV or a Corvette could do it. We turned left (W) and headed up to the TH for Granite. We got about 0.2 and the willows/aspens started to close in tight. Having 235K on the SUV, we plowed ahead not caring at all... We made it to 0.7 of the 1.2 miles to the fence crossing where others have stopped. There is a large patch of snow on the road, just before the big sweeping left hand curve, and it was melting back downhill spoiling the tenth of a mile leading up to it. We simply parked and began walking, having already gained most of the vertical already. From the car, parked at a flat shoulder on the approach ridge at about 8,340', we made it to the fence crossing in 12 minutes.
From here, we agreed with others that it would be useless to continue on the road, as it looked like it would be boggy/marshy all summer long, and out of the way too. We stayed on the right (N) side of the fence for a long ways in sage and other brush. Amazing wildflowers. As we approached the summit itself after the small false bump, we planned a route through the talus. We never thought it was worse than Class 2+. The slab noted by others could maybe be inferred to be Class 3, although I didn't think so. We did use hands on the rock, but scampered past it on the left. We skirted the false bump and never gained or lost extra ground.
Nice summit area, cool register box imbedded on a pole which itself is stuck deep in the ground. Usual cast of suspects had checked in. No one else up there except a couple of women hikers down near the car. Some old boy was parked at the saddle in his camper truck, enjoying the views, probably was going to be there for the weekend with all his possessions strewn about.
We made it up in 1:52, down in 1:30 to the car.
