Ascent Trip ReportI used the old trail for this one. It is not often maintained, and hard to follow in spots. A few notes:
There is parking on the west side of the road. The trail goes through a meadow area down to the creek, and is faint through the vegetation.
As of the time of my visit, the creek was running high enough that I was barely able to find one spot where I could cross with mostly dry boots. However, I'm told this was a very high snow year, so I'm guessing this would be less of a problem in early July of a normal year, and certainly shouldn't be a big issue later in the year. All the same, be prepared for a possible ford.
On the far side of the creek I scrambled up the bank and looked for the trail. It was not obvious, but eventually I picked it up. There were faint treads of a jeep road through the grass and other vegetation, and the aspens along the track were often blazed with three parallel vertical lines.
At about 9200' I picked up a very clear path, which seemed to be an old mining road. At about 10000' I took a path that dead-ended - I think I should have gone up (left) on a less distinct path here but I didn't see the top of this on the way down so I don't know. From here to 10400' I had some issues following the path, especially in the gully between 10300' and 10400' where the trail used to be but there is a lot of blowdown. I think if I were going back, I'd very likely just stay on the ridge top over or near point 10485.
From 10400' to the summit there was a relatively good, generally cairned path to about the point where the trail dies on the topo, and an easy ridge stroll from there to the register and benchmark. |
