Ascent Trip Reporti followed the summitpost directions. it took about 1h15m from the highway to the trailhead. gmaps will take you there, but it's not aware of the "no trespassing" signs blocking cherry creek road access. if you drive past that turn off, it will re-route you up the desired war canyon road. others have reported success driving this road with a subaru: it has some rocky sections, so i'd recommend good tires, and when you get into cherry valley you will need clearance. i really wouldn't want to be in cherry valley when it's wet.
i used eric kassan's track as a guide. i went up the pack trail on the north side of the spring, and then a bit of up/down across various saddles and ridges, eventually climbing to the summit.
the wild horses do a great job of creating many trails throughout the area, trampling their way through any brush which might get in the way. (they also leave huge piles of feces all over the place...)
on return, as i descended to the saddle south of 9454, i spotted one of these horse trails contouring around the west of 9454. i wasn't sure where that would connect, but i was curious and popped open my topo map. it looked like it would lead me to a ridge that would descend all the way to my truck. nice! so i took this alternate route for descent. it was steep in sections, 40% grade, so it probably isn't a great ascent route (but the pack trail is also no picnic, but it doesn't get past 25% grade much).
