Ascent Trip Report

Trail is in need of heavy maintenance, especially on the ridgetop due to drainage issues in some areas. Hiking during or immediately after a rain is not recommended due to slippery conditions.

The area is habitat for the endangered Azores Bullfinch. The entire range of the species is protected as a Special Protection Area, the Pico da Vara / Ribeira do Guilherme SPA (a Natura 2000 site), under European Union legislation.

No views or summit pictures on this day due to dense cloudy conditions.

A student from Lisbon named Raquel working on her masters thesis, met me at the Trailhead asking if I could fill out a survey. I did and found out that her report may be just what is needed to get funding for trail repairs.
