Ascent Trip ReportSpent 2 days in Worthington State Forest/Delaware Water Gap NRA doing a bit of backpacking. Started from the visitor's center at the river's edge and headed up the red dot trail to the top of Mt. Tammanay. Then I followed the Tammany Fire Rd northeast to the Warren County, NJ high point near Upper Yards Reservoir. What an ugly lake. Stay away! Then I headed back into the beauty of Worthington State Forest near Sunfish Pond and made camp at Backpacker Site #2. On the second day, I headed north on the AT along Raccoon Ridge, hitting all the high points, past Catfish Pond Gap, and up to Catfish Fire Tower. Great views of the gliders silently passing the ridge from there. One scared me as I didn't hear it until it was 30 ft over my head. I headed northeast from the summit to catch the Rattlesnake Swamp Trail. With a name like that, how could I resist hiking along it? From Catfish Pond, I connected back to the AT and headed south back to Backpacker Site #2 to pack up and head out. Naturally my tiny bivy was a draw for the other people there. While I packed up I had a great chat with a the volunteer AT ridgerunner who ran the camp site there in Worthington State Forest. He was a former Marine, so we had plenty to talk about, since I am a former Corpsman. I made it out as the dark set in and the rain began. The rain started falling at the exact moment I started digging through my bag for the car keys in the parking lot, so I didn't get wet at all. Great trip! Pics |
