Ascent Trip ReportVery dense herd path from BRP.
The TH is at the BRP's Greybeard Mountain Overlook (Craggy Gardens are), located 8 miles south of Mount Mitchell entrance or north of the Craggy Gardens Information Center. Access to the summit is via a herd path up the North ridge ....moderately graded on the lower slopes and steeper higher up.
The MTS trail enters the woods at the south end of the Overlook and after a short distance comes out and crosses the BRP on its way to the Craggy Gardens Information Center. Just before the MTS trail comes out at the BRP a good herd path leads left and ascends the North ridge. On this day the herd path was pink flagged all the way to the summit (not required).
The path is good and easy to follow on the lower slopes, higher up as it leaves the trees and reaches the rhododendrums and other types of shrubs it is heavily overgrown, and the path is tunnel-like .......I had to crouch down and stay below the top of the foliage in order to see the well troded ground path (sort of a semi-bushwack).
The summit is marked with a rusted pipe and a T fence post. You get some views above the 5-6 foot high shrubery. 1 hour RT.
