Ascent of North Palisade on 2017-06-03
|Date:||Saturday, June 3, 2017|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||14242 ft / 4340 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI flew down from Seattle to San Jose for the long weekend and Matthew and I drove out to Bishop to pick up permits Friday Morning. The road is plowed to North Fork Big Pine, and the trail is snow free up to almost 10,000ft now.
We camped at 11,500ft just below the Palisade Glacier Friday night, then hiked up to the U-Notch Saturday morning. The gully was snow-filled and I easily kicked steps in the whole way up. No problem with the bergshcrund.
From the notch we roped up and I led two pitches up the crack/chimney system (5.6?) to the summit ridge. From here we simulclimbed down to the south side into a big bowl, then up the 3rd/4th class rocks to the summit.
Descending the rap anchors were all in good shape, and we plunge-stepped down the soft snow gully back to camp and hiked out to the trailhead.
