Ascent Trip ReportStarted Friday afternoon and hiked up to Outpost Camp. Set up camp and started for the summit early Saturday, leaving tents and extra gear behind. Made good time to the summit, arriving with Chris and Nick close behind. Started getting a headache after about 45 minutes of resting at the summit and decided to start down with Nick. Saw Jon struggling past the trail crest making the last push, but Yev was keeping an eye on him. We pushed on, planning to meet back up at Trail Camp, keeping in radio contact. After arriving at the camp and filtering a new batch of water, we got a call that Jon was having a rough time with the altitude and that the others were running out of water and about to head down from the crest. I started back up the switchbacks with a fresh batch of water and met Yev a little past halfway up to take relay the water up. Eventually made it back to Outpost camp just as the sun was setting. Got some sleep and finished the last couple miles back to the portal in the morning.
A good lesson to make sure you've trained well before attempting a strenuous hike (especially at elevation). And always have a partner, backup plan and means of communication. Could have had a much worse result if we didn't. |
