Ascent Trip Report

We did this on a Wed evening.... Unfortunately a New Moon, so had to use headlamps on red mode. From 9:15PM to 2:10AM. 5 hours. We parked where others had, up the road westward a couple hundred yards. No hassles with anything at all. 9:15 allowed us to get a mile in with no headlamps on. Right call.

Several factors:

The gain comes mostly in one section, after the final creek crossings. Big hump up, then you're there.

There are actually perhaps 6-7 crossings, damp. We had on trail runner sneakers, and via careful footwork stayed dry. If there was any more water via a recent rain or being earlier in the Spring, we could not have done so.

There is one section where the trail goes from a 4WD road to a 2-track to a faint trace to just a hundred yards of grass. You can see this if you look carefully on the aerial photo. Stay the course, proceed straight, pick up the trail as it crosses the creek several times in a hundred yards. Glad I had on ankle gaiters, CA grass seeds are gnarly.

We looped around the far N side and back up, did not mess w the fire break. Probably the right choice.

We never felt that anyone could see us. Used caution back near the gate, got ready, boogied back to the truck.

We came via Copernicus from our motel in south San Jose. Shorter than the route via Livermore to the N, but brutal. Big pickup truck had a hard time on the tight curves. Many thanx to James for driving this sucker....

Thanx to Mihai and others for a great TR.
