Ascent Trip Report

***Sierra Club Outing***
led by Mat Kelliher, Gary Schenk

Camped at Chimney Peak Campground Friday night; we hiked down to the PCT from there Saturday morning. South and east on the PCT for 6.5 miles up to the saddle at about 7,000'. Brutal XC from here on traverse across several ribs and chutes. Route was occasionally ducked and kind of made sense. We cut the trip short due to a rock fall incident; a beach ball sized rock was dislodged and sent hurtling down the steep slope. It grazed the top of the head of one of our participants; she was wearing a helmet, which probably saved her from grave injury. Although she seemed to be okay, she was pretty shaken up and we weren't sure she actually was okay so we abandoned the objective. A cat scan at the hospital in Lancaster on her way home later showed everything was normal.

Our time from where we left the saddle and headed XC, to our turnaround spot, and back to the saddle was 8 hours! Brutal terrain!! We actually got off route on our return and headed too far down a gully; we looked around for a way to avoid it, but ended up having to gain about 300' to get back up to our route.

Mileage, gain, and time for entire trip: 15.35 miles, 3827', 15 hours
