Ascent Trip Reporti'm pretty sure you no longer have to enter the base to get to the trailhead. they seem to have arranged things so you can drive outside the base for either heading out to the coast (as i did yesterday for cone peak) or to the memorial park site. gmaps took me to both trailheads without issue. (probably still worth carrying your license, proof of insurance and car registration ... in case they change the entrance again.)
there are two river crossings on del venturi road: both are submerged concrete. there was two or three inches of water flowing on each crossing. no problem for my truck, but i'd guess the water is deeper earlier in the season and may be an issue for some vehicles.
there are some water sources along the trail: at 2.8mi into the trail there was a particularly solid stream flowing, which could be useful on your return. as you get within 3/4mi of the summit, as the trail works its way around point 5570, there is a crude sign on a tree saying "<-- water", and a trail forks off. this isn't on any maps i at prior to the hike (USFS, USGS, OSM). however it is on the VWA trailmap and listed as a reliable source, but it does appear to be potentially a 600' descent. (i was loosely scouting for a potential overnight trip to bag pinyon peak some day...)
the NOAA weather forecast was for 69F at the summit... and similar yesterday on cone peak. i have this to say: they were way off. both days were far hotter than forecast. i think their models must be off for these summits. i would estimate the summits were closer to 80F. it was 95F at my truck when i finished today. i consumed 4L on this hike.
i have nothing else new to add to the many existing reports.
