Ascent Trip Report

8/10/1979 - camped Baker Lake area
8/11/1979 - hiked to Shuksan Lake and swam, met up with Ken Drury, visited hot springs but did not get in
hiked to end of road
8/12/1979 - climbed the mountain started at 4:15AM and arriving at summit rocks around noon

On way out as we started to get into forest Bernie, Reinhold and I were ahead. We heard commotion ahead and arrived under a big tree to see dust and debris settling in the air. It seemed that the dust should have already settled before we got there based on the time from hearing things to our arriving. We looked down the hill and saw a black bear moving away from us. It would stop and look at us each time we would move then move on. Eventually it stood up on its hind legs directly facing us. What an amazing view of a standing bear! I told Bernie to whistle which he did. The bear came running up the hill toward us. We ran down the trail at 90 degrees with respect to the bear's direction as fast as we could until we lost the poor trail. The bear did not follow us. Upon reflection we concluded that the bear had cubs up the tree above us. This would account for the falling debris too long after the sound and for the bear running toward us to protect its cubs. Dietmar and Ken did not see the bear and thought we were joking when we told them what had happened.
