Ascent Trip Report

D. Kinchenko from our Denver office treated me to nice hike up into the flat irons for the big attraction of the big Royal Arch. It is listed as 3.4 mile 1,647 foot climb. There are some big drops where you gain and re-gain and I estimate that as about 185 feet each way. I parked lower than the TH off of the road since the parking lot was full and ended up with nearly that exact number ( a little more since I started in the street not the TH) so my estimate of the add gains must have been pretty good.

The is a beautiful hike with a nice geologic feature finish. We scrambled up some of the rocks around the arches and some areas has some exposure nearing as high as one can go it becomes a 5.6 climb so we hiked over to where the eastern ramp was located and it does not look like a very tough class 5 up but we did not see good protection places. Good rock climbers would scamper on up that ramp without protection but I like to have it especially when in hiking boots - so we did not attempt to rock climb this to the very top. I read later that this approach is considered like a 5.1 and is often the exit. I am not a very good rock climber and was wearing hiking boots that do not smear well. So we called that a successful hike even though we did not stand on the very top of the arch which I presume others have.
