Ascent Trip ReportAttempted in mid-October, I think about 10/16. Left my brother's in southern California (elevation about 1200ft) in the morning (7am?), left trailhead at 11,700 ft or whatever it is late, about 2pm. It was very cold and windy. I saw a German coming down from the summit at about 13,000ft. I made it to about 1000 vertical feet below the summit, but I as very out of breath (so going slow), it was getting dark, and I was experiencing elevation sickness... and yeah, it was cold. Ended up walking in the dark for probably 3 hours or so to get back to the car. I experienced strange elevation sickness symptoms: confusion, inability to walk in a straight line/dizziness, and I had to just stop and take a break (even though I was walking downhill/flat) periodically. It was quite scary. Thankfully I made it back to the car OK and was OK on the drive out, despite the fact that when driving out, one stays at almost the same elevation -- above 10,000 ft. -- for 40 minutes or so (can't remember exactly). I continued east along my intended journey, seeking the lowest elevation place I could find to camp, which ended up beinf 5500 or 6000 ft or so, somewhwere near some telecommunications equipment or something along a dirt road in the weird forgotten California area near Oasis. Felt mostly better after 8+ hours of sleep. Slept late, and had a visitor in the morning -- someone drove out I guess just because they were curious what I was doing there and if I was all right. |
