Ascent Trip ReportBehind the Pierce Trucking Depot on 3rd concession road, Ruthven.
NB: this is no longer the COHP, a higher COHP has been found to the northwest, see the new Essex COHP.
We crossed back into Canada at Windsor, ON. after visting our son and his family in Houston, TX. Good opportunity to visit a few High Points in this part of the Province.
Essex County, a flat area, is an important agricultural area of ON, with numerous huge greenhouse complexes, growing mainly cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes ..... we all remember STOMPIN' TOM singing about Leamington in the "The Ketchup Song".
This High Point is very near Kingsville Ferry Dock that takes you south about 25km to Pelee Island. The ferry schedule suited ours so after the Essex High Point we decided to hop the ferry to Pelee Island ...... visit its High Point and spend the next day playing tourists.
DIRECTIONS TO THE HIGH POINT
Coming from the west, Windsor area, travel southwest on hwy #3 towards Leamington ....... after passing Road 8, hwy #3 makes a left bend (east), pass huge greenhouses on the right and arrive at a main junction, hwy #3/Road #34, signed "Ruthven". Turn right (south) on Road #34 and travel 650 meters to a left turn (east) on 3rd concession...... the High Point is 1.5km East to the right (again passing huge greenhouses on the right), behind the Pierce Trucking Depot # 1965, just past JBF Office Building #1963, across the road is T.Murr Exteriors (3rd Conc is an industrial area).
From here it is very easy to get to the Kingsville Ferry Dock, just follow the signs.
"THERE WAS A GUY FROM P.E.I. THEY USED TO CALL "POTATO";
HE MET THIS YOUNG LEAMINGTON, ONTARIO TOMATO;
BUT HE HAD EYES FOR OTHER GIRLS AND SHE WAS A LITTLE MUSHY;
SO THEY SAID WELL "LET'S GET WED, THERE'S NO SENSE BEIN' FUSSY"!
BAKED SIZED FRENCH FRIES, HOW THEY LOVE TOMATOES;
SO DRESS 'EM UP WITH HEINZ KETCHUP-
KETCHUP LOVES POTATOES.
KETCHUP LOVES POTATOES." ............... "the ketchup song" lyrics by stompin tom connors
