Ascent Trip ReportSteve originally scheduled this climb for the week of April 9-15. He wanted to climb Mt. Hood with his wife and to give basic alpine climbing students a shot at a glacier climb. Poor weather pushed the climb date into May. Unfortunately, Steve's wife was unable to join us and we only had one student on the climb.
We started from the Timberline parking lot shortly before 2:00 am. We stopped at the top of the Palmer Chair Lift at 8500' at about 4:00 am. After another short break to rope up, we were on the summit at about 8:30 am.
It took time to get down because a large group ahead of us rappelled over the bergschrund. We did not rap the schrund, however Steve set up a belay just above the Pearly Gates and the assistant lead placed a few pickets. They did a great job. Some spots were too icy to get a good ice axe placement, but I still felt pretty secure.
We glissaded and strolled down and took another break near the chairlift. I made it back to the parking lot at about 2:30 PM.
