Ascent Trip Report

I was driving back from SSA in Denver with my brother on US-285, when I spotted this peak from the Collegiate Peaks overlook. After eating lunch at Eddyline in Buena Vista, I decided we should attempt to scramble it from the South.

We backtracked to the Collegiate Peaks overlook area and took Colorado Rd 304 to a parking lot for mountain biking. Upon reaching the parking lot, I found a map of the area that indicated that Midland Hill had a trail to the summit out of Buena Vista. Rather than waste time looking for the trail, I decided to continue with the scramble.

We headed north across open fields and then ascended ~500 ft up the south face of the SE ridge. This was mild class 2 climbing through boulders and trees and ended in a meadow. I then headed slightly west and continued up the south face, and the scrambling/route finding became slightly more difficult. About 150 vertical ft from the summit, we encountered steep topography and I was forced to take a class 3 route my brother was not comfortable with (really just a 15 ft section of slabby rock with nice holds). I ascended this route and quickly picked my way to the summit (the class 3 move was by far the crux).

The summit contains a register that is well signed and has a trail going to the top as indicated by the map. Fantastic views of the Collegiate 14ers and of the Arkansas River Valley.

I headed down, met back up with my brother and we retraced our steps to the car - deviating slightly to take Colorado Rd 176a instead of hiking cross county as we had on the ascent.

Cool peak - I hope to do it again sometime via the standard route.
