Ascent Trip ReportI reached access for the Jasper County highpoint in a steady rain and my motivation dropped when I saw all the posted signs on nearly every property, including a "keep out" sign on the residence adjacent to the land the lookout tower sits on. Before I left the area I decided to collect information from the only house in the area without a posted sign on it. The owner was very friendly and even said he owned the tower at one time. He said the present owner was friendly and he called him to announce my arrival to ask permission to climb. I reached the owners property quickly and got permission to climb after a brief conversation. He even said I could climb the tower, but I should stay off the top deck since it is not safe. He also mentioned that there is a benchmark up there. My GPS indicated I was only .11 air miles from the summit, which I was glad because it continued to rain. I put on my poncho and reached the lookout tower in just 5 minutes. I did not find the benchmark, but with the bad weather I did not look very long and I didn't feel safe climbing the tower in the wet conditions, so I quickly returned to my car in less than 4 minutes, wishing the conditions had been better so I could have gotten a view from the lookout tower.
