Ascent Trip ReportAs far as I can determine, South Wolfpen Ridge is the 5th highest named highpoint in Georgia. Based on most of the trip reports, I guess I wimped out on this climb and made my approach from the north starting at the Brasstown Bald parking lot, instead of climbing from the south, which makes for a much longer ascent. My justification is my limited window for climbing. I traveled all the way from Missouri and only had 6 days before I had to be back at work. I had a lot of goals on this trip and if there was a shorter route to bag a summit, then I took the opportunity. After paying the $5 parking fee for Brasstown Bald, I was delighted to find a maintained trail at the south end of the parking area all the way to the summit of Wolfpen Ridge. I was expecting a dense bushwhack. It seemed strange to me to be so close to Georgia's highest point with no intention of climbing it, but I have summited Brasstown Bald 5 times before and it was not a goal of mine on this trip. It was only .3 air miles from the trailhead to the top of Wolfpen Ridge where there is a nice summit rock on the west side of the trail, but no view due to the trees. It was only 12 minutes up and 9 minutes down. If you need more of a challenge you can climb Wolfpen Ridge from the south and save $5 per person at the same time by not having to park at the Brasstown Bald parking area. |
