Ascent Trip Report

This was a private hike with George Christiansen, Pat Arredondo and Winnette Butler. My main goal was to get Brown for my 5X Lower Peaks list. While doing that, we picked up some Peakbagger peaks in the area. We met at the La Canada rideshare then drove to the Eaton Saddle on Mt. Wilson Road. From Eaton Saddle, we went around the gate and hiked down the road about 1.8 miles to where the road makes a sharp turn to the east. At this point a trail starts going west. This is the Tom Sloan Trail. In a few hundred yards we went over Peak 4910. There we saw a paddle sign indicating the start of the trail. We started down this trail to the Tom Sloan Saddle at 4000’.
After a brief rest, we started up the use trail heading west going over several bumps before reaching the ridge that leads to Brown. This use trail is easy to follow, steep and loose at times. At one point we had to climb over some boulders. Once on the ridge to Brown, we turned left and hiked a short distance southeast to the summit of Peak 4388. There was a little brush but it was easy to walk around. There was no register or benchmark.
After 4388, we went back going west to the ridge to Brown. We followed the ridge about 3/10th mile to Brown. There are two rock piles on the ridge. The first one is smaller is the actual Brown peak. About 200’ further is a second, larger rock pile. This pile contained the register. There were two registers; one for Lower Peaks, the other was labeled 6 Distinct Small Peaks. The register for LP was wet, so we set it out to dry while we went on to get a couple of other peaks.
Next was Peak 4406. From Brown, we went due west to 4406. We found a boundary marker but no register. Next was Peak 4288. From 4406, we headed northwest over several bumps about 1/3rd mile to 4288. Here we encountered a little more brush but it was fairly easy to find our way around it. On 4288 we did not find any register or benchmark.
From 4288, we backtracked to Brown where we had lunch and signed the LP register. After lunch, we continued back down the use trail to the saddle then up the Tom Sloan trail to 4910 and the road. At the road we turned right (east) and hiked about ½ mile to a saddle just before Peak 4789. To reach the summit of this peak, we had to push our way through some brush. It wasn’t very long, but it was very brushy. On the summit there were a couple of boulders but no register or benchmark. After 4789, we went back to the road and headed back to the car.
