Ascent Trip ReportThis was also with guide Miglena Varbanova from motoroads.com. We took the ski lift from Borovets to a ridge that reaches out from Musala. The ski lift doesn't run every day during the summer -- you need to make sure it is running on the day you plan to use it. It mostly just eliminates a very long slog, with much more limited views than the hike above the ski lift. Above the ski lift, there is still a long open hike, with many fine views. The trail reaches a hut near a glacial cirque bottom. Then the trail turns steeply uphill. There is a place where you have a choice between the "winter route" which is a very steep ridge with a cable to hold on to, and a more conventional trail. We went up the conventional trail, and came down the winter route. The two routes rejoin near the summit, which has another hut and a summit monument. September 6 is a Bulgarian holiday, and the monument had a couple of Bulgarian flags and other colorful banners flying from it. With all the bright sunshine, it was a very cheerful scene! A number of other hikers were enjoying the views at the summit. |
