Ascent Trip ReportA lovely trip off-season to a cool location. My brother Pete and I had great weather. Took the ferry from Point Judith (Galilee) in RI to Block Island. $24 pp. Off season is only the slow ferry, summer there's a fast ferry for more $. Not a problem, just a 55 min ride. Ferry can accommodate hundreds, plus many cars. No need for advance ressies most of the time, maybe summer weekends. Great seafood available near the dock as you wait. Park a block or more away in the small lots, free.
We pondered the 2 mile+ walk briefly, then encountered one of the island's taxi drivers. Good call...
Vin McAloon will take you right to the highpoint of the island. CAUTION - this is private property, and in the summer the residents can be there at any time, or not... Vin had no issue driving us up there in April, said it might be a problem between about Memorial Day and mid-September. He knows the owners, and always knows if they are in town or not.
Cool old stone structures on top, great view in all directions. Its about 100 yards or more from the road (there is a sign about private property) up to the top. If anyone was in residence there at the various cottages they would see you. I urge visitors to come in the off-season, use Vin's shuttle van, and then get a tour of the rest of the island. We paid Vin $40, but were with him for a long time. He had initially said he would drag us up there for $15 I think and drop us off.
