Ascent Trip Report

I used the trip reports to plan my climb of Bald Rock Mountain along with Google Maps and The White Pages to locate "Bill" mentioned in previous reports as Mr. Champion. I called ahead and brought him a waiver and he allowed me to park in his driveway. We have a good relation and he said I can return with small parties.

I then headed down the power easement which quickly began to rise drastically. The steepness of the ascent reminded me of Asgard Pass or the Inter Glacier of Rainier in Washington. It is VERY steep: I would say that 40 degrees would be the norm. There is a band of rock that is just below the summit. on my ascent I climbed a gully in the rock band that was to the RIGHT of the easement; clearly class 3, but only exposed you to a fifteen foot fall onto the slope.

Once on the summit tower area I headed right down a small trail which continued behind the concrete platformed tower at the end of the road. Within a few hundred yards I was on an exposed almost knife like rock ridge with a 360 degree view. It felt like being out west. I found two benchmarks.

Going down I took the east side of the power easement (the opposite side that I climbed up). This seemed easier as I followed a ridge for a ways but it quickly CLIFFED OUT! I was too tired to scramble back up the ridge to the summit ridge and located the weakest points in the band and down climbed a ten foot section of nearly vertical rock.

I've since been told there were easier ways through the rock band, but I was having fun.
