Ascent Trip Report

2017 has been a very snowy year so I decided to attempt this on a very sunny tax day. I parked in a wide spot on the south side of 140 about half a mile east of the Summit Trail Head and Snowpark. I put on my snowshoes and departed at 10:30, just as two skiers were returning to their vehicle. They said that conditions were great. These were the only two people I saw all day.

Navigation was pretty simple: up. I managed to follow their track most of the way. I ended up making switchback on some of the steeper parts. Snow was very firm at the base but transitioned to up 12 inches of powder near the summit. Weather was absolutely beautiful and I had great views from the summit. Mt McLoughlin dominated the views, but I could also see all the way from Mt Thielsen to Mt Shasta. Aspen Butte was socked in with a cloud, virtually the only one in the sky. That was disappointing because that hike is on my radar for this year and I wanted to get a better idea of the layout.

The descent went very quickly and I was very happy to be back at my car.
