Ascent Trip Report

First hike of 2017! I ascended Mt. Rowe on the Ridge Trail, along the service road, past the new mountain coaster. The road has limited views to the north and east. The air was very clear today and snowy contours stood out on the mountains in the distance. I continued past the cell tower at the summit to a grassy clearing on the trail where there were excellent views across to the Gunstock ski slopes and to the east to Copple Crown and Moose Mountains. There was also some sort of GPS receiver in the back of the clearing that claimed it could determine its position within a few millimeters. After dropping to a small col, the trail begins to climb moderately. Here, I began to see more and more snow along the trail. It was quite deep in some places, but it remained in very scattered patches for the entire hike. As the trail approached the ski trails in several places, I could see that it was sufficient for skiing, in fact, and along the rest of the hike, I encountered several people who were skiing up and down the mountain. On the upper part of the trail, there are two excellent viewpoints that look in directions that can't be seen from the summit. The first takes in the western Whites, including the Kinsman Range and Moosilauke. The second vista looks southwest and I could see many distant peaks like Monadnock and Killington. At the summit of Gunstock, the view was incredible over the lake. This was the third time I had seen it, the first two being on skiing trips in the winter. After eating lunch on the summit lodge deck, I enjoyed the view from a chairlift chair. I descended the mountain on Brook Trail, which was filled with miniature brooks from melting ice. The descent was not nearly as nice as the ascent, since it was near ski trails and was very muddy and involved three tricky brook crossings.
