Ascent Trip Report2016/09/28
Day 1 9/27: hiked towards Hoodoo Pass on the E Fork Buttermilk Trail then left trail and bushwhacked cross country to meadow then up to Seance summit, then descended Seance to Bernice Lake and camped at Bernice Lake. On Day 2: 9/28 we climbed Finney and returned to camp at Bernice Lake. On Day 3: 9/29 we climbed Beefhide and Horsethief/Sunrise, and camped below Horsethief/Sunrise just off the trail on the ridge near point 7384'. We had filled our water bag from a stream that we crossed before on trail 1256 not long after crossing the pass into Horsethief basin. On Day 4: 9/30: we hiked on trail 1256 to North Navarre and summitted N Navarre Peak, then hiked back to camp, picked up camp, and headed back to Prince Creek Trail and on to Boiling Lake, but before camping at Boiling Lake we climbed Cheops. After Cheops we set up camp at Boiling Lake in the frigid air, where the sun don't shine! It was very cold in this camp on the last day of September... On Day 5: 10/01 we hiked out to the car via Hoodoo Pass and E Fork Buttermilk TH. With David Salinger. Note: terrible destruction to the Prince Creek trail 1259 from bikes and motorized vehicles, esp. east of the pass above Horsethief basin, all the way to Boiling Lake...utterly destroyed trail rendered nearly unusable for horses and human foot traffic. The earth is all torn up with deep, narrow tire ruts and there are several parallel braided rutted/grooved trails here now. This was once, and recently, such a beautiful area, now ripped to shreds.
