Ascent Trip ReportThe HPS Spring Fling took place this weekend at the Borrego Palm Canyon campground, which happens to be the trailhead for Indianhead, a DPS peak, so it was natural to lead it. We had 8 people: Peter and I led, Jin Oak Chung, Illwoo Suh, Lawrence Lee, Naresh..., Tracey Thomerson, Wasim Khan. It was Wasim's first real scrambling hike since his broken ankle 11 months prior on Heald. We started at 7:15am for DPS Route B. The canyon was beautiful and cool in the shade. The stream was flowing rapidly and the wildflowers were out in force, although some were at the end of their bloom. We continued up the canyon to the oasis where we stopped for photos, then continued farther up the canyon to the ridge that we ascended to the summit ridge. It was very steep from here on. It was all slow-going because there was no clear path past the first palm oasis to the top of the ridge, and we lost it a few times on the ridge, both ascending and descending. The view from the summit was spectacular. It was very hot descending into the canyon as we lost the wind and were in direct sun. The round trip took us 10 hours, much longer than any of us expected, but we got back in time for showers before the Spring Fling happy hour potluck.
