Ascent Trip ReportFirst attempt from Long Side ended in failure due to a fear of sliding in the snow and ice coupled with my inexperience and lack of winter equipment. After some lunch. I tried one more time on the advice of a seasoned local walker. A worry of 'How the hell am I going to get back down?' created a genuine fear of heights that made me feel physically sick. But I kept going upwards until I got to the summit. Surprisingly, coming down was a breeze in comparison. I was no longer worried about how to get down because I was doing it and thus the fear of heights also was vanquished. Strange thing the mind. But the ascent in deep snow left me with cramps in both legs and not enough fluids to stop them completely. Lack of fluids and cramps prevented me bagging Little Man and the Dodd on this occasion. |
