Ascent Trip Report

Since the desert was too hot, made a last minute change for this peak. Larry and I carpooled up. We missed our exit from I-15; as Foothill Pkwy is not on any of the freeway signs (in either direction). When we arrived at the parking area, there were several dozen of cars, so we parked about quarter mile away. We started down the paved path behind the houses at approximately 8:30am. I carried 5 liters; some of it for training weight. (3 was suffice for the temps and distance we were going). The route becomes a dirt service road just past the homes. Lots of people hiking/biking the service road. The road winds and winds getting a good lather for the workout. hoping for a little breeze but didn't get any; wanting the cooling but also to keep the bugs away. The flowers were in bloom and there are many great vistas to take pictures. If you look, you will find vehicles in the very steep ravines. We reached the main divide road intersection (~4.5 miles) at oak flat just over 2 hours. Turned right to head towards Sierra Peak. There are many up and downs, rights and lefts. The peak is just right there but seemed like it took forever to get there. Found various benchmarks along the way. In the saddle just before the final approach to Sierra Peak, is a cypress tree (rare). Reached the peak at about 3 hours and 20 minutes. There are lots of communication buildings and towers. There is a summit sign and a LPS register. Found the main benchmark and one reference marker but couldn't find the others. headed back after a quick lunch (due to the flies and gnats). wasn't looking forward to the many ups/downs and rights/lefts, but luckily the descent didn't seem as long the ascent. should have continued to Beeks Place but didn't; knowing still had almost 5 miles to go down skyline. If it wasn't for the pesky flies, likely would have. About a half mile or so down, took a use trail the a bike/fire break on the ridge along skyline looking for Hagador BM (marked 2694 on topo). Found a large X made of rocks marking the spot where the benchmark was suppose to be. Looks like a victim of firebreak clearing at some point. Headed down the bike trail. There were some spots on the descent with some dangerous fall exposure (not necessarily fatal but would have a nearly impossible way to climb back up due to terrain). One thing about a road hike, while easy footing and grade the descent always seems like a forced march. We reached the car at about 3:20pm. This hike could (and should) have been done with a mountain bike.
