Ascent Trip ReportA woods/farm road hike .... 3 miles, 450 total gain, 1:15 hours RT for both areas.
Once on top of the ridge there is no more sign of a strip mine, I arrived to a huge pasture land with a lot of cattle, farm roads, barns, trailers and equipment. All is nicely shown on the satellite imagery. This was an easy stealth hike, permission would have made it more enjoyable, although there were no signs at my TH. I didn't see anyone on-route.
We followed the directions in Mike Beavers TR, this report attempts to update today's ground conditions.
From JCT Hwy #127/Kroger Mountain Road (S of Static at the KY/TN State Line) we went E on the paved Kroger Mountain Road for 2.1 miles to a right turn on Rocky Ridge Road (gravel), then another .5 miles E to the gated woods road on the right, with I believe the same abandoned flat bed trailer that Mike saw 16 years ago. This was our TH (36.59097,-85.02150). There are no signs here.
I walked/climbed the woods road S 100 yds to a right switchback (NW), at .25 miles the road bends left (SW, a tall vertical face to the left) and comes out at the ridge (36.58967,-85.02637) .5+ miles from TH,. Straight ahead S is all pasture land with animals. In the distance to the SE I could see barns, bus, backhoe, house trailer - ??? what to do ???? decided to proceed, hopefully finding friendly foes (didn't see anyone).
I went E on the farm track 300 yds to the obvious North Area, a huge barn full of hay is 40 yds to the S. I walked around/east-of the barn and picked up the farm track that took me S 3/4 mile to the South Area. On-route passed nd old bus, backhoe, house trailer. About 500 yds S of the barn is a good road coming up from the E which I address a bit further. I descended back to the TH from the South Area in 32 minutes.
From our TH we drove E on Rocky Ridge Road for 1/4 mile to a gravel road on the right that climbs too steep for our van (otherwise we would have gone to its terminus. This we believe is the road that I refer-to above. Its a shorter/easier route even if one parks at Rocky Ridge Road.
