Ascent Trip Report

Difficulty getting to the TH due to emergency with hiker who collapsed in the heat 4km from the TH. The rangers at the gate wouldn't let us go up until the ambulance, police, and other vehicles had come out, but they didn't realize it was going to be hours for this to happen. Finally, they let us go when I pointed out that they were putting us at risk by making us go up in the dark. We had no problem letting the exiting vehicles pass us. Got there just as it got dark. Started hiking before sunrise and it was already warm. Jim found a route that almost entirely skirted the lava--definitely worth the trip around it. View from summit was mostly clear. Can see Sea of Cortez. Temp was 100 when we returned to the trucks. DPS guide is inaccurate in distance and gain (it is 3.01mi as the crow flies from the TH to the peak). We found it to be closer to 8mi and 2800'.

Side note: we had no problem with the border crossing either way. On our return, we learned that AZ schools just started their spring break. The line of cars going south through Lukeville was over 2 miles long! These people want to go to the beach at Puerto Penasco, the closest beach to AZ. Avoid this time if at all possible!
