Ascent Trip Report

We were already tired and sore from Red Hill earlier in the day and Hunter and Overlook the day before, but my dog Jax and my friend Dave had my back as we climbed Tremper to finish my Catskill fire tower peaks in winter. We made decent time heading up the Phoenicia Trail, a lot of which is just an old jeep road. The first section of trail had no snow at all, just a small bit of ice. About 10 minutes into the climb we started to see some snow, but otherwise barebooted the trip until roughly the last half mile, where the ice and small amount of snow warranted just a little better traction. We only saw one other group on the mountain, who appeared to have stopped at the leanto at 2.2 miles and headed back, as evidenced by the lack from of any footprints beyond that point. Despite the bitter wind and cold, it was a decent climb and one that I'm happy to have done. Total time was 3:20 and was my 18th winter fire tower. Just 5 more to go in the Adirondacks to earn my winter rocker.
