Ascent of Sky Mountain on 2017-02-26
|Date:||Sunday, February 26, 2017|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5482 ft / 1670 m|
Ascent Trip ReportOur team of 12 hiked up to Skyline lake on the 25th to practice some snow camping skills. Woke up at 4AM on the 26th and started hiking at 5AM. We decided to take the safer route of climbing up to Heather ridge from the lake and then descend down into the basin (since it was still dark out). We then traversed the 5000 ft contour line before finally climbing up a steep 40-45 degree slope to the saddle below Sky mountain. From there on, it was a easy ascent up the summit ridge to the final summit. We reached the summit at ~8:15 AM. We decided to traverse Heather ridge on the way back since we had daylight to get back to camp by 10:00 AM.
Snow conditions were not very ideal with 5ft of fresh powder which made progress slow and some of traverses a little hard. There was a good chunky ice layer beneath the fresh powder for some solid steps if you took the time. The team had ice axes and took turns kicking steps. We carried crampons in our packs but did not need them. Our original destination was Tye peak but based on the snow conditions and weather we decided to attempt Sky mountain instead.
