Ascent Trip Report

This hike capped my day after a dull hike to Chambers Mountain. I hate doing the easy hikes, so I picked up the Appalachian Trail at Brown Gap in the Harmon Den Wildlife Management Area. This is a 3.5-mile hike one-way northeast to Max Patch. Your other long hike option is from Lemon Gap which is north of Max Patch, which I believe is 5.5-miles one-way. Initially I thought this might be a mistake. FR 148A gets pretty rough near the top, really deep washboards that made me concerned. I drive a Nissan Versa, but I made it to Brown Gap. The second worry is the AT climb out of the gap is steep, at least 650 feet in just under a mile. However, the AT levels out at 4,000 ft the rest of the way until you climb to Max Patch. So in fact it was a moderately easy hike. Whoever reads these may not believe it, but this was my first time at Max Patch. The summit was truly amazing, some of the best views of the biggest NC mountains. You can see the Bald, Newfound, Black, Great Balsam, Plott Balsam, and Great Smoky Mountain ranges from here.
