Ascent Trip Report

The fog looked like it was about to clear and Karen wanted to get some exercise. I knew there was a very nearby hike and we could barely make out the peak so I encouraged her to come. She was wearing clothes and boots to go visit Beverly Hills later that day. The last hike was easy so why not? Turned out to be a mistake! unlike the hike up Saddle Peak which was not muddy and only slightly steep, this ascent was very steep and a bit muddy.

Karen had on her nice boots that she wanted to wear down Rodeo drive. Soon we got up the hump from the backbone trail and we could see the steep herd trail up the spine of the small peak but the fog made it impossible to see how steep it was and where the top was. The hike is class 2 with some class 3 moves here and there in sections and at the top. None of the class 3 is hard but it was still wet enough here that it was a bit tricky for her. I had hiking boots and the ascent was easy but her fashion boots had soles with no grip and we were trying to make sure she did not get her outfit dirty. Needless to say it was a slow ascent and descent but we made it up and down with no incident and no mud that could not be wiped off easily. I just had to take my time with her and giver her a hand.

Ironically, the sun came out and burned the clouds and fog back and we got spectacular views of the valley and coast and ocean on our descent to make it all worthwhile. Finally! The countryside was greener than anyone had seen before because of the unusual rains of late. We found some interesting fossil marks in the sandstone. This is a nice easy quick fun trip with proper footwear. On the way down, Karen looked back at me at one point and laughed and said....."from this to Beverly Hills today?"
that pretty much sums up the day!
