Ascent Trip Report

Portion of hike that was not on bike. I left the bikes in favor of some walking where the ranger would allow for it. I first hiked over and found BM Timms and the USGS marker is easy to find on top of the hill. Then I hiked over and tagged the taller subpeak that the USGS map labels as point 1555.

This hike/summit entry was a desperate move to "bag" something that had a view and was on top of the terrain around after being turned back by the conservatory ranger because he felt the trails interior were still too wet from the rain from the day before. I got the exercise I wanted and some nice views along the way. But the outcome was a disappointment. nobody else in peakbagger has entered a failed summit of Black Jack and Orizaba. But I had the luck of being on Catalina for the hardest rain to hit the LA area in years and it made national news. It also closed the island down so the ferry was not coming over. The tourists did not come over. We were stranded and hiked a little before the rain and was out of luck after that.

The rains made the entire island greener than the locals had seen it before and I would have rated this hiking experience for the 2 days much higher if it were not for the rains, cloudy conditions, and the ranger not allowing us access to any of the higher prominence peaks. I would come back and try again but the cost of this endeavor is high. A really interesting island but the ferry is expensive and the $30 permit to go back in the backcountry roads or bike to them is stiff and not a great deal when you consider I had to pay a total of $180 for two bikes with the permits just to be turned back at the gate to the prize peaks.

That is why I felt compelled to climb and summit anything I could once I got away from the ranger controlled territory and was surely and safely on dry sand and grass where there was no argument that I could cause erosion by hiking today or get mysteriously injured by wet mysterious killer clay which I never saw the entire 2 days.
