Ascent Trip Report

East Mountain is actually lower than East Peak. It is just a small subpeak along the long ridge heading southwest to East Peak which is the tallest feature on the southern portion of the island. It has the second most prominence of any peak south of the isthmus that separates Catalina into essential two nearly separate islands (and during higher sea level periods it is two separate islands). The ridge between Cactus-2 and East Mountain has many up and down rolls so you get some additional gain. About half the way to the top the clay maintenance roads merge with the fire breaks and you can go back to hiking the roads. The roads are much less steep and easier terrain to hike especially in the rain.
The clouds were rolling in with high winds and we lost all of our good views. The actual peak was anticlimactic as we were in a white out of low wet cloud cover by the time we reached the summit. It is found just off the road on another fire break. Then we headed quickly to the taller feature East Peak. We had been hiking now for about 2 hours and it was getting wet and cold.
