Ascent Trip Report

We were called by the hotel to hurry and get over to the island quick that a bad storm was heading in and that the ferry service would shut down for weather (Catalina Express). We changed our ride to be on the 6AM instead of the 4PM and sure enough the hotel people were correct. That ended up being the first and ONLY shuttle that made it across the channel due to high winds and rough seas. Heavy rains were coming and I wanted to get in a hike. We are breakfast and set off to try and bag East Peak and East Mountain. To cut out time from the long winding road, I elected to spin off from the paved road Wriggly Road along the SE side of the Island out of the town of Avalon. This turned out to be a bad move for Karen. I headed up the fire break trying to avoid the upcoming drop in the paved road and lose elevation and take a more direct route. IN doing so, the fire break route takes you across the crest and ridges of all the peaks so there is a lot of gain and regain and better views but the route is very steep in sections. In muddy conditions it can be tricky. It was windy and starting to sprinkle. But we needed to summit before the heavy rains supposed to start around 11 AM.

Karen had trouble with her shoes and slid a lot and was slow up the fire break but we finally reached the first USGS map BM names subpeak called Ord 2. Decent views of the island still but the overcast was showing that we were in for a rough day if we did not hurry. We elected to stay on the wide open firebreaks and deal with the slippery clay and steepness. The second peak was Cactus-2 USGS BM
