Ascent Trip ReportDriving directions from Arizona Highway 86 about 10 miles northwest of Sells:
(I revised this after my 2019-02-16 ascent) 0.0 Turn west onto a dirt road at virtual milepost 100.8 0.8 The road drops into a sandy trench. These trench entries and exits require good clearance. 1.3 Bear Left at a Y. 1.7 Leave the sandy trench to the Right. The trench becomes quite deep and narrow for awhile here. 2.2 Bear Right at a Y. 2.8 Merge with a road from the Left. 3.2 Continue onto a better-graded dirt road. 5.2 Turn Right before a corral. 5.7 Turn Left at a Y. 6.4 Turn Right at a Y. 7.2 Bear Left at a Y. 8.1 We parked here (the road steepens and ends a short distance beyond).
I can provide a GPX track of the drive in and out to those interested.
The "East Face Trail" (Scott Surgent's 2015-04-12 miner's trail) starts at the end of the road and leads to a broad saddle at about 3750 feet. The trail is in good condition and is easy to follow except for a few very short sections. From the saddle climb west up an open ramp to the summit where we found a registry in rocks. There is another registry at the South Mountain Benchmark about 100 yards to the south of the summit. |
