Ascent Trip Report

It was just plain carelessness that cost me this high point today. I had entered one digit wrong on my GPS and this led me to a raised area in a pasture. I had gone to the trouble of getting permission from the landowner and I should have suspected there was a problem when he kept saying, "I didn't know my land had the highest point in the county." It wasn't until I was over 1/2 mile from my car that I noticed my GPS showed I was only 900 feet in elevation and there was nothing around me at the 1245 feet needed to be the county high point. I was very embarrassed and I left a note for the friendly landowner explaining my mistake. I called my son, Marshall, who was able to get me the correct coordinates and I hurried off to the actual high point for Sainte Genevieve County. Unfortunately, I had trouble locating the access road and no one was home at the spot where you drive up passing directly in front of this home. Since it was after sunset now, I didn't feel comfortable driving up this road without getting permission, so I gave up my summit attempt until I can return in daylight hours.
